Description of Committee & Groups  


Adult Education
: Arranges programs and activities to enrich the Jewish knowledge of the Congregation.

Budget & Finance: Collects from committee chairperson, the President and key Temple staff projections of the income and expenses for the following fiscal year. The Committee’s responsibility is to present a draft budget to the Board of Trustees, obtaining input from the Congregation at open meetings, and to presenting a final balanced budget to the Board of Trustees for its approval.

Brotherhood: Organizes Brotherhood functions and events, i.e., decorate temple sukkah, sports night, breakfast programs.

By Laws: Updates and reviews Temple By-Laws.

Choir: Promotes worship through Jewish choral music. A mixed group of novice and experienced singers who rehearse weekly and sing in Shabbat services and occasional other special events.

College Outreach: Sends out holiday packages to the college students.

Communications: Oversees all publicity on behalf of the congregation, including all committees. The communications committee also includes the Temple Bulletin Editor (who overseas the editing, printing and distributing of the temple bulletin) and the Webmaster (who updates the temple website with news and calendar information).

Education: In conjunction with the Rabbi and Director of Education, establishes operating policies and curriculum for the Religious School, and requirements for Confirmation. Is responsible for the performance and management of all classes, programs and activities; employment and supervision of faculty and staff; resolution of disciplinary matters; and the formation of budgets that the Chairperson of the School Committee and/or the Board of Trustees may from time to time require.

Fundraising: Responsible for all specialized and general fund raising for the Temple, exclusive of Sisterhood and Brotherhood, and the establishment of guidelines and procedures for solicitation and recognition of donors; to coordinate annually with Sisterhood and Brotherhood a comprehensive fund raising schedule to avoid conflicts.

Housing: Responsible for maintaining the facilities of the Congregation and establishing, in conjunction with the Temple Administrator, the rules and regulations for the use of the facilities.

Israel: Coordinates, publicizes and administers the Passport to Israel program as well as educates the congregation about Israel through Israel Independence Day programs.

Landscaping: Designs landscaping for the building and implementing those plans.

Library: Creates and maintains a user-friendly library that is available for serious study.

Membership: Encourages unaffiliated individuals to join the Congregation. Develops programs for the recruitment, orientation, integration and retention of all Temple Members and Associate Members.

Music: Coordinates and reviews all aspects of the Temple relating to music, including arranging for special musical programs.

Outreach: Provides programs and activities to support interfaith families, Jews by Choice and potential Jews by Choice, and encourages a Jewish way of life.

Personnel: Sets policies and oversees the execution of policies relating to the terms and conditions of employment of professional and nonprofessional Temple staff.

Ritual: Advises the Rabbi regarding the format and structure of worship and ritual practices for the Congregation; determines the requirements for becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Sisterhood: Oversees and coordinates weekly Oneg Shabbats and Bimah flowers. Coordinates the temple donation funds. Provides gifts for Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and confirmation. Provides Torah’s for consecration. Provides food for the school and temple celebrations. Offers community programming and education.

Social Action: Provides programs and activities to educate the Congregation about social action issues and serving the community in the spirit of Judaism.

Youth: Oversees the Youth groups that provide extracurricular programs and activities which enhance positive Jewish identification for the youth of the Congregation.
